Adeline arrives in ten days (or so)!   My incredible daughter Meghan is having a baby in about a week.   Wow!  Kinda hard to take in all the amazingness that’s about to arrive in our family.

I had a blast shooting some maternity pics of my amazing daughter and awesome son-in-law.   Knowing your daughter is with the person who is perfect for her is just an incredible feeling.   And that my granddaughter will have these two for parents…lucky, lucky kid.

If you want to see the best wedding photographer I know, check out Meghan’s work at Visual Poetry.

An Unplugged Wedding

An Unplugged Wedding

Consider having an unplugged wedding.     Hire a photographer you trust, and then let your guests know to turn off their phones and to leave their iPads and cameras at home.   I say this more as a recent father-of-the-bride than as a wedding photographer.   And I say this after my daughter had an unplugged wedding.

My youngest was married a few weeks ago.  An absolutely beautiful, windy, chilly ceremony at Black Canyon Inn in Estes Park.  I took in every single moment of the day.   I cried the moment I saw her in her dress.   And then the rest of the day was a mixture of joy and laughter and tears.  I shot a few photos as she was getting ready but then I set my camera down for the rest of the day.  I’m glad I did.     It was wonderful to walk her down the aisle and then sit a few feet from her and her wonderful groom and to really  experience their ceremony.   And it was perfect to spend the rest of the evening toasting, and dancing and just taking in all the love around me.   I didn’t miss my camera for a second.

As much as I love photography, when I’m taking photos, that’s what I’m focused on.  I’m focused on the emotion and the moment but I’m also thinking about the composition, and the light, and everything going on around the frame…and then the same thing a moment later with the next shot.  It is a busy place in my head while I’m shooting.  I also experience, and I’m effected by, the emotions and moments going on around me, and that drives what I choose to shoot in the moment.  But that is sharing space with everything that goes into making a meaningful image.    I realize your guests may not be going through the same process I am, but if a person is taking pictures during the ceremony, they’re missing a part of the ceremony, too.

So, that’s my take as a father-of-the-bride.   As a wedding photographer, it doesn’t really effect me much either way.  It’s a fact of life I’ve accepted that a guest will occasionally ruin a shot.  But it’s not that often and it doesn’t effect the overall coverage.  I’ve got photographer friends who are driven a bit crazy by all the guests and family at weddings who are shooting during the ceremony.  I get it.  It can be frustrating to be just about to capture that exact, perfect moment when the bride is coming down the aisle, with the perfect expression, her eyes meeting the eyes of the person she loves most in the world…and then a guest with their iPad launches themselves into aisle, between you and the bride.  That moment’s not coming back.  But the beauty of a wedding is there are so many incredible, emotional moments.    Any inconvenience to the photographers pales next to mom or dad or a grandmother who misses a part of the magic of that special day because taking photos is a priority.

Removing the option of taking photos at your wedding is a pretty amazing gift to give your wedding guests.

Brittany and Jacob's wedding looked like it was going to get rained out but the downpour stopped right before their ceremony. And the light afterwards was sorta perfect.
